Advent Begins New Church Year

The word Advent derives from the Latin word meaning coming. The Lord is coming. We may reflect that every year at this time we celebrate his coming , so that in a sense we can lose the feeling of expectancy and joyful anticipation, because at the end of the season, everything seems to return to pretty much the same routine. If that is the case, then our preparation may have been lacking and we have therefore been robbed of much of the true meaning of this season.

During Advent we recall the history of God's people and reflect on how the prophecies and promises of the Old Testament were fulfilled. This gives us a background for the present. Today we can reflect on the past track record of God and so begin to understand what it means to us now for the sake of what is to come, in our own future and that of our world.

Thanksgiving Proclamation

Proclamation of Thanksgiving

October 3, 1863

This is the proclamation which set the precedent for America's national day of Thanksgiving. During his administration, President Lincoln issued many orders similar to this. For example, on November 28, 1861, he ordered government departments closed for a local day of thanksgiving.

Sarah Josepha Hale, a 74-year-old magazine editor, wrote a letter to Lincoln on September 28, 1863, urging him to have the "day of our annual Thanksgiving made a National and fixed Union Festival." She explained, "You may have observed that, for some years past, there has been an increasing interest felt in our land to have the Thanksgiving held on the same day, in all the States; it now needs National recognition and authoritive fixation, only, to become permanently, an American custom and institution."

Prior to this, each state scheduled its own Thanksgiving holiday at different times, mainly in New England and other Northern states. President Lincoln responded to Mrs. Hale's request immediately, unlike several of his predecessors, who ignored her petitions altogether. In her letter to Lincoln she mentioned that she had been advocating a national thanksgiving date for 15 years as the editor of Godey's Lady's Book.

The document below sets apart the last Thursday of November "as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise." According to an April 1, 1864, letter from John Nicolay, one of President Lincoln's secretaries, this document was written by Secretary of State William Seward, and the original was in his handwriting. On October 3, 1863, fellow Cabinet member Gideon Welles recorded in his diary how he complimented Seward on his work. A year later the manuscript was sold to benefit Union troops.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

Years ago, while visiting the Cross In The Woods Shrine, Indian River, Michigan, we walked the paths of the outdoor Stations of the Cross and then headed toward the giant cross. On the way, we passed by the statue of St Francis of Assisi. It was there that our granddaughter paused awhile. As she was the last to return to the group, her mother noticed she had a stone in her hand. And, as it seems inappropriate to pick up stones at a national shrine, her mother said, "Oh, sweetie, please put that stone back. You shouldn't pick up stones here."

To which our 3 year old granddaughter, pointing back toward the statue of St Francis, said, "But, He told me I could have it".

There was nothing more that could be said.

Anglican 1000 Spotlights The MSJ

“At our recently concluded Society Gathering, we were blessed to have Canon Jon Lumanog as our featured guest teacher,” says the Rt. Rev. Frederick G. Fick, “As the MSJ [Missionaries of St. John] gathered for encouragement, refreshment, instruction, worship and fellowship, the Holy Spirit ministered among us, re-charging us for the works He has given us to do. We left our gathering as people more committed and greatly empowered to continue our many works, our church planting, and our witness for our Savior. We were so honored to have Canon Lumanog among us to teach, instruct and inspire us. The messages were most timely as we are launching two new church plants in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky and the Lake Villa area of northern Illinois.”

The Venerable Dr. Jon I. Lumanog, the Canon for Provincial and Global Mission for ACNA, was the featured speaker at a recentMissionaries of St. John gathering in Clinton Township, MI. Canon Lumanog brought greetings from Archbishop Robert Duncan and then taught leaders from Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Kentucky and Illinois on church planting, community ministry along with overcoming clergy burnout.

The Missionaries of St. John is an evangelical catholic religious order that expresses its rule of life by living out the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ in the venerable tradition of Anglican missionary societies. The order is canonically resident in the ACNA’s Missionary Diocese of All Saints.

Canon Lumanog recently joined Archbishop Duncan in carrying out the work of the Province with its missionary partners. He challenged MSJ to be a part of the Anglican 1000 movement to raise up 1,000 Anglican congregations and communities of faith across North America to reach people with the transforming love of Jesus Christ.

The gathering ended on Friday night with a Holy Communion service led by Bishop Frederick G. Fick, MSJ Father General. It was a spirited time of praise that included a reception of new members. The gathering was hosted by Church of St. John the Apostle in Clinton Township, MI, Fr. Terry Moore, Rector.

Canon Jack Lumanog At MSJ Gathering

The Venerable Dr. Jon (Jack) Lumanog, the new Canon for Provincial and Global Mission (ACNA), was the featured speaker at the annual Synod of The Missionary Society of St John the Evangelist (MSJ), held 11-13 August at St John the Apostle Anglican Church, Clinton Township, Michigan.

Canon Jack offered a realistic but inspiring review of his experiences in church planting and ministry. He shared with the clergy and lay delegates the keys that he personally had found valuable in navigating the challenges of starting with a church of just nine members and growing it to well over 70 members and a variety of strong lay-led ministries. Many of the strategies began as his personal involvement with the community beyond the “parish borders,” including ministry on the campus of the University of Michigan in Lansing, and working with other, much larger, churches to supply food for the hungry. Among the achievements he holds dearest is his fellowship with Sudanese refugees and the result that they have established their own growing Christian fellowship. He encouraged MSJ members to maintain a balance between ministry and family, noting that sacrificing family time for the work of the ministry often destroys both, but that keeping the proper borders and boundaries can give new life and energy to both as well, especially as one comes to know, trust and rely on the laypeople who take on the Work of the Kingdom within and without the “normal parish” paradigm. His simple re-telling of the basic principles of church-evangelism and then the imaginative ways he put them into practice, often by what appeared to be “God's back door,” offered members of the Society refreshment for their souls and inspiration for the work of the coming year.

Although not yet relocated from Lansing to Pittsburgh, speaking to the delegates of the MSJ Synod was Canon Jack’s first function in his new role, and those in attendance felt his sincerity and passion for the missionary vision which is at the Society's heart and the heart of his new post at the Archbishop's side. The members present remain deeply grateful to Abp. Robert Duncan for encouraging Canon Jack to spend this time with us, that the bonds of affection between the Society and the Primate may be further developed by our common vision for the salvation of the lost and our commitment to the up-building of the faithful. The Society offers Canon Jack its heartiest congratulations and prayers for God's rich blessing on his new service within the larger Church.

The Rev. Canon Dr. Jon Ignatius Lumanog serves as Rector of Christ the King Anglican Church in DeWitt, Michigan and as the Clergy Formation Advisor for the Heart of North America Region of the Anglican Mission in the Americas. Canon Lumanog is passionately committed to collaborating with churches and ministries of all denominations to expand the Kingdom of God.

Canon Lumanog has served in various ministry capacities as Archdeacon to the Bishop and Province, Interim Rector, Evangelist, Worship Leader, Youth Pastor and as Home Missionary-in-Training at an inner city church. Lumanog is a 1996 graduate of Cornell College (BA, Religion). Graduate studies include Master of Divinity (Anglican Studies) and Doctor of Ministry (Pastoral Counseling and Church Administration) degrees.

Dr. Lumanog serves as the Great Lakes Region Deputy Chaplain for Administration and the Wing Chaplain for the State of Michigan with the United States Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol where he holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He resides in Lansing, Michigan with his wife, Amy, and their daughters, Ainsley Mae and Hadley Grace.

The Anglican Church in North America announced The Venerable Dr. Jon (Jack) Lumanog as the new Canon for Provincial and Global Mission. In his new role, Canon Lumanog will be the chief programmatic officer of the Anglican Church in North America assisting Archbishop Duncan in carrying out the mission of the Province, both domestically and with international Anglican mission partners.

“Canon Jack Lumanog will bring tremendous gifts and energy to the work of building the Province together. In his own history are the three streams of our Church life, a fact which strongly draws him to our vision for a biblical, missionary and united Anglicanism in North America. I look forward to his joining me as a ‘right hand’ in the mission of reaching out with the transforming love of Jesus Christ both domestically and abroad,” said the Most Rev. Robert Duncan, Archbishop and Primate of the Anglican Church in North America.

Canon Lumanog most recently served as church planter and the first rector of Christ the King Anglican Church in Lansing, Michigan. He also serves as the clergy formation advisor for the Heart of North America Region of the Anglican Mission in the Americas (AMiA). While planting Christ the King in Lansing, Canon Lumanog was involved in campus ministry at Michigan State University and was elected twice as president of the Religious Advisors Association where he worked with the officially recognized campus ministries in the Christian and Jewish traditions. He also was active in ministry in the areas of church planting and acts of service to those hit hardest by the economic crisis in the Mid-Michigan region.

Canon Lumanog expressed his passion for mission, stating, “To see the Anglican tradition at its best is to see everybody around the table of the Lord being transformed in His presence. I’ll go wherever the Lord wants me to go and I’m humbled by the call to assist the Anglican Church in North America as we strive to fulfill the Great Commission.”

“Jack has been a valuable part of our regional leadership team for several years and is one of the most competent priests I have had the privilege to work with. All of us in the Anglican Mission are excited for this new chapter in Jack and Amy’s lives and ministries and are encouraged that his service to the Anglican Church in North America will deepen the bonds of affection and cooperation in our Anglican family,” said Bishop Doc Loomis of the AMiA.

I arrived home from Belleville, Illinois (just across the Mississippi River from Saint Louis) tonight. I was at Our Lady of the Snows Shrine/Conference Center for the Annual Assembly of Forward in Faith (a group of Anglo-Catholics and a founding group of the Anglican Church in North America). I'd like to share with you (via my feeble words) what I saw late last night as I wandered the grounds of the Shrine...

A couple of years ago (during my first attendance at the Annual Assembly in Belleville), I immediately sensed the peace and joy of being in a place made holy not only by the miracle involving Our Lady, but by the fervent prayers and devotion to Jesus of those who flock to that special Shrine. Since I love walking in the quiet of the night, and since the Shrine affords ample opportunity for doing so, I set out that first year to discover.

What I discovered that year was a grotto (a replica of the one in Lourdes, France in which our Lady appeared), and an enormous fountain and sculpture dedicated to the Annunciation of Our Lord Jesus Christ to the Blessed Virgin Mary (the news given to our Lady that she was chosen to give birth to Messiah). In the pool attached to the fountain there are four “Angelus” bells that appear to be floating over the surface of the water! The bells are rung in the morning, at noon, and in the evening to call the faithful to remember our Lord’s incarnation (becoming human by taking upon himself our flesh).

You can’t imagine the peace and closeness that one feels walking around these grounds. While I’ve been deeply touched by the proceedings of each year’s Assembly, I think it’s these midnight walks on the grounds that I’ve come to look forward to most. Even nature itself seems to feel safe in those surroundings! That first year, as I walked near the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, a deer walked in front of me (no more than ten feet away) with perfect ease. I’m certain that she saw me before I saw her. Bach’s music, “Sheep May Safely Graze” suddenly popped into my head and, when she had passed from before me, an excited call was made to Emily!

This year, however, tops the previous two! I noticed something I hadn’t seen before: A statue of our Lord at prayer. I knew instantly what it depicts. He’s shown kneeling in agony, and the statue is placed in grove of trees. Seeing this figure (dimly but adequately lit) in that setting was more than a little unsettling. I went and sat with him. I kept looking at his hands. I don’t know why, but I wanted to touch them. Maybe it’s because his are the hands that made me, saved me, and healed me. So I did; I touched them.

As soon as I touched those hands, I had a healthy sense of how unworthy I am. My mind couldn’t begin to comprehend him or understand his love for me. I think that this must be exactly the point of that statue, because, as I moved out of the grove of trees, I looked to my left and saw a path I’d not noticed before. You know what happens next! I began walking it. Lining it are the fourteen Stations of the Cross, each of them beautiful pieces of sculpture set in protective booths and lit. The path winds down a hill and forms a half-circle around the grove of trees.

About half-way around the path something else struck me. In the midst of the chirping crickets and bullfrogs, a more silent witness was given to our Lord’s love and immense creative power: What seemed like millions of lightning bugs – more than I have ever seen in one place before!!! To my right there was an opening in the canopy of trees. It revealed a small valley surrounded by trees – almost like an amphitheater. From top to bottom came what seemed like millions of flashes of light! Astounding!

As I walked on (contemplating my own weaknesses and asking the Lord why I can’t seem to get past some of them), one more thing happened that took my breath away. There was a rustling in some bushes just in front of me, and out popped a deer! She stood in front of me for a moment and then walked into the deserted street. It was then that I could see that her front legs were malformed. I think that something of the spirit of Saint Francis must reside in that place! That makes sense, because, when I looked around, I remembered that I was standing in a place where outdoor healing Masses are often celebrated! Maybe the Lord was trying to show me something?!?

Brother Nathan Dunlap, MSJ is introduced by Bishop Keith Ackerman to share about Forward in Africa with the gathered Forward in Faith Annual Assembly. Brother Nathan shared about his role as Director of Forward in Africa - having taken over the reins from his venerable predecessor, Father Francis Wardega. In the course of his talk, Brother Nathan told of the deep need for theological education on the African continent being filled by Forward in Africa.

Brother Nathan recently spent three weeks in Tanzania teaching basic Christian theology. Brother Nathan shared that his students were like sponges, writing down nearly everything that was shared in lectures. He also shared that the brothers and sisters whom he taught were very well versed in Sacred Scripture.

This past weekend (June 3-5) St John the Apostle Anglican Church (Clinton Township, MI) welcomed Nathan Dunlap, his wife Julie, and three of his children into their parish activities. Nathan came to SJA to share with us the vision of his work with Forward in Africa. He met past supporters of Fr Francis and OFM to thank them for making Forward in Africa possible through their continued prayers and monies. The weekend was a success for all involved.

On Saturday, while Br Nathan trained with Deacon Bob Chalmers, the people of St John and the rest of the Dunlap family enjoyed a day at the Detroit Zoo. That evening many gathered over at the Moore house for a time of greeting, telling stories, and getting to know one another. From the children playing in the tree house, to the lively conversation, fellowship, and great food, the bonds of affections increased and were multiplied.

On Sunday Br Nathan spoke at both the 8 and 10 AM services. He reminded us of Africa’s great tradition and role in Christian history and the Church. He also illustrated how influential our Anglican heritage has been in spreading the gospel and how it is still bearing fruit in the furthering of the Kingdom. He told us of the needs and challenges to provide capable well-trained priests for the rapidly growing churches. He shared that the vision of Forward in Africa was to teach the teachers, encouraging us with the word that while all cannot go, all can participate in the work.

The End Of The World?

Dear Saints:

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!

I wanted to drop a few short lines concerning all the media coverage about the "End of The World" and it happening this Saturday. ( Tomorrow as of this writing).

I would have written earlier but, honestly, I really did not think this effort by Mr. Camping and Family Radio would gain this much interest, much less the level of belief and the fears that are being generated with it. There are many reactions being seen: fear, loathing, panic, parties, expectation, the giving away of goods, homes, cars, pets, people quitting jobs, saying good-by's and all manner of things.

Sadly, I did expect some to react, but not at the level that is being seen.

There are a lot of good responses to have in this situation and,my first to you is this: I honestly cannot tell you the Lord will not be back tomorrow , nor any other day, anymore than Mr. Camping can rightly tell you He will, it simply is not something we are given to know, nor to try and "figure out".

Jesus tells us that it is not for us to know the "Day or the Hour" of the bridegrooms return, but rather for us to "be on the alert" with our lives, to live prepared for His return , by what we believe, by what we do, according with who He is. ( Parable of the 10 Virgins- Matt. 25:1-13 )

So what should our response be to this?

1. Fear not: If the Lord is coming back tomorrow or, whenever He comes back, it is not something for the Christian to fear, but something we should look forward too.

2. Have Compassion: Let us look with compassion on those who are being hurt in all of this, who will feel ashamed, broken, let down if the Lord does not return in the morning. Most of these souls have been led astray by poor theology, poor leadership, and just plain heretical teachings. In this, they are not to blame, they are indeed victims of abuse. It will be hard to ask for their job back, ask friends for the car back, the house, the mortgage and so forth. It will be hard when they realize they hurt some people when they asked if they could "leave" things with them, as if those people were not going where they were come judgement day- yes, there will be feelings hurt, that need to be mended, tended. Let us have compassion on these souls rather than ridicule them.

3.Use and Gain Wisdom: Let us use wisdom in this situation, for while Mr. Camping's theology is a mess, it does not mean God cannot come when He wants, even if it were the day Mr. Camping predicted! Mr. Camping's theology would still be a mess, but the Lord Sovereign. The old saying about "even a blind hog finds and acorn every now and again" might fit well here.

If the Lord was already coming for the final judgement, He is not going to change plans just because of Mr. Camping's poor theology and resulting prediction.

Let us be wise in knowing that just because some mis-use the Word of God, it does not mean God has failed or, that His word has failed- on the contrary, these mistakes are often used of God to show the difference between Truth and Error.

4. Be Merciful: Mr. Camping and many of those that follow him truly believe they are correct, from their hearts, they believe this, they want this and, they love God as best they can, with what they know, where they are, according to what they have been taught.

Let us not revile them, but instead be merciful with out thoughts and prayers.

Many are jeering, making fun, laughing, but Jesus tells us: ““Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.” (Matthew 5:7 NAS95)

5.Let us Remember:We need to remember why God sent His Son and what being saved is really all about. The whole of the Gospel is about relationship with God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, it is not about "going to heaven" , but about the person of Jesus Christ and our relationship with the Father through Him and this relationship empowered by the Holy Spirit. This is the purity of the Gospel , to be back in right relationship with our creator, Heaven and missing judgement, well, those things take care of themselves if we have this relationship with Christ Jesus. The Point is not trying to get to heaven, the Point is becoming One with Christ, thats where our hearts focus should be. ““Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Matthew 5:8 NAS95)

I will close with this: It is not for me to say when the Lord is returning or not returning, it is however for me to say: He will come again in glory!

The day and time is not ours to know, what is for us to know is the person of The Lord Jesus Christ, everything else will be as it should be.

Mr. Camping's Theology is terribly flawed, some is outright heretical, and much of his staff plans on being at work on Monday.

However, as much pain as will be involved ( if/when the Lord does not return tomorrow ) a lot of good will come as well, many have found themselves questioning their thoughts, actions, the condition of their souls and this, this is a good thing, this again simply proves the amazing grace of God, in that no vessel is so cracked, so broken , that God cannot get good use from it.

And that my friends: Is Good News indeed!

As for me, well, I plan on seeing you all in Church on Sunday, not because any of you were found unworthy-smile- but because you have been found of such great worth, such great worth indeed, that He saved you and wants to be with you, to serve you of Himself as you seek to praise and adore Him in worship.

Think on this as you go about your day:““For the coming of the Son of Man will be just like the days of Noah.“For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark,and they did not understand until the flood came and took them all away; so will the coming of the Son of Man be.“Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.“Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one will be left.”

(Matthew 24:37–41 NAS95)

And I ask you: In the days of Noah, Which were removed and which were "left behind"?

The evil was removed and the righteous servants left behind and, just as it was, so shall it be. “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NAS95)

For the past couple of years, Anglican faithful have gathered for worship and fellowship in Free Soil, Michigan. Graced by the hospitality of St John Roman Catholic Church who have opened their sanctuary for use by CTK each Sunday at 11:15 a.m. Once a month, Fr. Earnest St. Johns, a retired priest, has driven north from his home in Grand Rapids to offer the Eucharist. On other Sundays, morning prayer has been led by one of the faithful lay people and often by Rex Benfield, who serves as lay pastor.

Today, Bishop Frederick Fick, MSJ was invited to preach and celebrate at Christ the King. A fellowship dinner followed and a lengthy period of discussion followed. It was an encouraging and wonderful day.

Ashes, Ashes, We All Fall Down

Ash Wednesday. A day in which millions of Christians around the world will attend services of repentance and reconciliation. Hearing those words usually reserved for graveside interment, "Ashes to ashes, dust to dust". Having ashes placed upon one's forehead is odd enough, so why do we do it?

We remember we are but dust, and to dust we shall return. In recognition of our mortality, we begin the season of Lent by facing our deaths, our sins, our failures "head on" so to speak. We remember the mercy of Lord and His desire to forgive those who turn unto Him with hearty repentance and true faith. We are reminded of the song of children, "Ashes, ashes, we all fall down". Indeed. We all fall, we all fail, in what we have done and in what we have left undone.

We call to mind our sins and remember again the forgiveness that comes to us through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, who died on the cross to pay the price we could not pay and to conquer sin, death and the devil. So, as we begin our 40 days of devotion, let us first remember that "we all fall down". Ashes. Ashes.

Kentuck Chapter To Meet

Graduation Day In Tanzania

The last week in Tanzania was very busy. Fr Francis was teaching at Christ the King Anglican Church, for 16 evangelist pastors in the center of Geita, Tanzania. Brother Nathan was teaching to around 25 evangelist pastors in Mwanza, at Nyakatto Bible College.

At the direction of the Archdeacon of Geita, an exam was administered to the students at Christ the King and only those who passed the exam would successfully pass the course. The students worked hard to prepare for the exam. Their efforts were rewarded when all students passed the exam with a grade of â€œBâ€� or higher. They rejoiced and celebrated.

Bishop Kwangu and his wife Mama Mary, and Brother Nathan traveled to Geita on late Saturday in order to be a part of a graduation liturgy on Sunday. The Bishop celebrated the liturgy and Brother Nathan preached the sermon, a word of encouragement on responding to the love of God and his plan. The congregation applauded the sermon.

Certificates of Achievement were awarded to the students in Geita. The Bishop congratulated each student and awarded the certificates. Later, gifts were give to Fr Francis, Brother Nathan, and to Bishop Fick, Father General of the Missionary Society, who sent Fr Francis and Brother Nathan to teach in Tanzania. The congregation danced in praise of the Lord and everyone stayed for a festive luncheon after the liturgy. After the luncheon, Bishop Kwangu, his wife, Fr Francis, and Brother Nathan returned to Mwanza to complete the teaching there.

On Monday, Brother Nathan completed the teaching at Nyakatto Bible College. The students sang and praised the Lord and celebrated, thanking Brother Nathan. Tuesday, Fr Francis and Brother Nathan had dinner at the Bishop's residence where Bishop Kwangu thanked all who made the teaching possible, and asked Brother Nathan that teachers come again next year. He especially liked how two teachers made concurrent classes in Mwanza and Geita possible and hoped that concurrent classes would be possible next year.

Then, the long journey home began on Wednesday with a flight from Mwanza to Dar es Salaam on the coast of the Indian Ocean. We are now in Dubai, on the Persian Gulf, awaiting our flight from Dubai to New York City, a flight that takes fourteen hours.

It is very important that all who helped support this trip in prayer and finances know how grateful the people of the Diocese of Victoria Nyanza are to you and to know how this program is working. It is working well.

Three years ago, over forty churches which were led by evangelists held services that were essentially free form services, with readings selected by the pastors. Now, the evangelists vest in a white alb and a cross. They use the readings of the day as assigned in their Anglican Prayerbook. The service takes the form of Morning Prayer and when a priest visits, includes Holy Communion. The sermons are an expression of the readings of the day and the people are taught the basics of the faith, as experienced in the Anglican Church. The ministry and teaching is deeper and more detailed. More churches have been started and more buildings are being constructed. This ministry contributes mightily to the growth of the Gospel, to the growth of Christianity and to the growth of the Anglican Church in Tanzania.

As always, we are grateful to God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, (Mungu, Baba, Mwana, kwa Roho Mtakatifu).

Dear friends and family,

May the peace of Christ be with you.

We have completed the second full week of teaching here in Mwanza. It has been a very busy and good week here. We have been studying "The foundations of sacred scripture", a course which examines the history of how we got the Bible, some basic elements of Bible study, and an overview of each book of the Bible. The class continued to be very attentive and "came with me" very well.

Last week I mentioned that what they lacked in knowledge, they made up for in enthusiasm. However, I should make it clear that the students know their Bible very well and are very sharp. If I accidentally misquoted a verse or contradicted myself, they would catch it immediately and point it out. This was good, for it meant I had to stay alert!

At this point our plans are to travel with Bishop Kwangu to Geita on this Saturday to join Fr. Francis. He has finished teaching his class there. We will stay to attend church on Sunday morning and return together to Mwanza that afternoon. Fr. Francis will be joining me for my final day of teaching on Monday. Tuesday will be a day of goodbyes and preparation for our return. Wednesday morning we will begin our long journey homeward. I expect to be home next Saturday evening.

The food here has been quite good actually. Mostly rice, potatoes, veggies, greens, tomato soup, beef or chicken, and fruit. I don't want to scare off any potential missionary teachers! I have received great care here and the people I have had contact with have all been very friendly and helpful.

Once again, thank you for your interest and prayers. God is at work and it has been a very good trip so far. I hope to send out a final report after I arrive home.

The Real Saint Valentine

The first representation of Saint Valentine appeared in a The Nuremberg Chronicle, a great illustrated book printed in 1493. [Additional evidence that Valentine was a real person: archaeologists have unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to Saint Valentine.] Alongside a woodcut portrait of him, text states that Valentinus was a Roman priest martyred during the reign of Claudius the Goth [Claudius II]. Since he was caught marrying Christian couples and aiding any Christians who were being persecuted under Emperor Claudius in Rome [when helping them was considered a crime], Valentinus was arrested and imprisoned. Claudius took a liking to this prisoner -- until Valentinus made a strategic error: he tried to convert the Emperor -- whereupon this priest was condemned to death. He was beaten with clubs and stoned; when that didn't do it, he was beheaded outside the Flaminian Gate [circa 269].

Saints are not supposed to rest in peace; they're expected to keep busy: to perform miracles, to intercede. Being in jail or dead is no excuse for non-performance of the supernatural. One legend says, while awaiting his execution, Valentinus restored the sight of his jailer's blind daughter. Another legend says, on the eve of his death, he penned a farewell note to the jailer's daughter, signing it, "From your Valentine."

St. Valentine was a Priest, martyred in 269 at Rome and was buried on the Flaminian Way. He is the Patron Saint of affianced couples, bee keepers, engaged couples, epilepsy, fainting, greetings, happy marriages, love, lovers, plague, travellers, young people. He is represented in pictures with birds and roses.

Report From Mwanza - Tanzania

Dear Friends and family,  

Greetings in the Name of Christ.  We have made it through our first full week of classes for Bishop Kwangu. We have completed two courses so far. "The Beliefs, Teachings, and Practices of the Historic Christian Church", What has been believed by all Christians, everywhere, for all time. And, "Introduction to Apostolic Ordained Ministry", a course that examines the qualifications and duties of ordained ministry along with the Ethos and Ethics of Christian Ministry. I am averaging about 25 students in class eah day.

The ones who live farther away are staying in a simple dormitory on the compound, while others come by bus from their homes. As you know, Fr. Francis is teaching in Geita, about 2 1/2 hours away.   The weather has been pleasant and sunny. About 80 at night and about  90 during the day. It has rained twice since we are here. This is  the "rainy season" which means everything is green and growing well.  I see many gardens throughout the city wherever people can find a spot  of ground to grow something. I am told that later in the year  everything will be brown from the heat.  

There does not seem to be any traffic rules to follow except drive on the left side of the road and avoid getting hit. Other than that, do as you wish! The African people seem to be very patient with this system of traffic and I have not seen any accidents.

  The students of my class are very involved, listening carefully and asking many questions. Their questions cover a broad variety of subjects pertaining to Christian doctrines and ethics. I have to rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance to give them the best answers and advice. Sometimes progress is slow because of the many discussions, but this is good. It shows that they are thinking and leaning well. As they say here in Tanzania, "the students are coming with the teacher".  

The people have been so kind to me. I am humbled by their attitudes. What they lack in knowledge or possessions, they make up for in enthusiasm. They are ordinary people doing the best they can with what they have to care for their families and to do God's work. The African people work very hard and are very industrious.

The average person makes less than one dollar a day. As anywhere in the world, there are problems to deal with in the churches and in society. But God is at work here and the Gospel is being spread by these evangelists. We are here to help equip them to do their work better -- and they are grateful.   May the peace of Christ be with you.

Bishop Hewitt Reports

Forward in Faith/North America – at the Council Meeting, 1 – 2 February, at the Bethany Retreat Center in Lutz (Tampa) Florida, we contended with snow and ice storms and delays from northern and western parts of the Country. But we pulled together and worked on Council membership, preparations for the June Assembly in Belleville, IL. and the need for FiF/NA and FiF/UK, the Federation, and the ACNA, to “travel in convoy.” Forward in Faith, as an organism in the Church to live, teach and witness to the fullness of the Catholic Faith, aims at being a new Oxford Movement. The Rev. Dr. Kevin Donlon was elected to the Council as an adjunct and advisor for theology and ecclesiology. He and his parish, the Church of the Resurrection, in nearby Odessa, hosted a supper for us, and an Evensong and Benediction for the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord.

Our journey to Mwanza. First, Dar es Salaam, the city of peace, welcomed two missionary teachers from the MSJ. The temperature was hot, upper eighties and nineties. The city was crowded. The traffic was slow. But, like Paul in the Mediterranean, we traveled on. No shipwreck, no chains, no tossing things out of the plane. Nine thousand miles traveled at 35,000 feet in the air. Safe arrival in the mega-city of Dar es Salaam, on the coast of the Indian Ocean.

On the journey. Lines to wait in. People to watch. Many languages. Different styles of dress. Made friends with some folks from Chile – they did not understand our English and we did not understand their Espanol, but we communicated. Prayed with some Nigerian Catholics, Ibo Tribe, for safe travel back to their homeland. They made the sign of the cross in the same way as we do.

Brother Nathan and I, talked much on what and how and why and where and who and what if. Western, Eastern, Anglican theology, authors, spirituality. Put away the clothes for the cold weather – short sleeves are the uniform of the day. Got long sleeved shirt back out again as the planes were well air conditioned.

Nathan met our taxi driver in Dar es Salaam who has served us for six years, Edison. Edison and Nathan exchanged contact information for future ministry trips.

Flight to Mwanza. Dar es Salaam was hot. Mwanza was cooler. It is rainy season – low temperatures in the seventies, maybe even high sixties. Nathan and I met with diocesan bishop, Rt Rev Boniface Kwangu. His plan, Nathan teach in Mwanza, at Nyakato Bible School, all new students, teaching lesson plans starting with Course 101. Fr Francis travel to Geita, several hours away, and teach former students, advanced lesson plans. Fr Francis will rejoin Nathan on Feb 21for closing meeting with the bishop and journey back to the USA.

Nathan made arrangements for interpreters, for housing, for financing, and for sustenance. He learns well. Bishop Kwangu recognized the future and acted accordingly.

We rested in Dubai. We rested in Dar es Salaam. It was good to arrive rested in Mwanza on Thursday because we start teaching on Friday!

So, the work has started. Teaching simultaneously in two locations. Your prayers and financial support has birthed classes in two areas, concurrently. The OFM ministry grows. Thank you God. Thank you God's people.

Bishop Ilgenfritz Visits St John the Apostle

Bishop William Ilgenfritz, ordinary of the Missionary Diocese of All Saints, ACNA, shared an evening of fellowship and worship at St John the Apostle Anglican Church, Clinton Township, Michgan Wednesday. This was Bishop Bill's first visit to an MSJ parish and what a wonderful introduction it was!! The evening concluded with a celebratory eucharist. In his sermon, Bishop Ilgenfritz reminded the congregation that all baptized Christians are called to ministry and to sharing the Good News in Jesus Christ.

Dcn. Ken was born at home in Wapello County, Iowa on January 8, 1931 and raised on a working farm. He graduated from Agency High School and attended Iowa Success Business College. He was subsequently drafted into the U. S. Army, where he served two years active duty and six years in the reserves. He farmed for one year and attended Iowa State College, extension course, for vocational agriculture and worked at John Deere Ottumwa Works in office services.

Dcn. Ken moved to California in 1959 and worked at Lockheed Aircraft until June of 1986, as a Liaison Engineer. He has the equivalent of a Bachelors Degree in Engineering. He retired and went to work for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle for a total of 6-1/2 years.

Dcn. Ken was ordained to the deaconate in January 2000, in Seattle and attended St. Michaels Seminary.

He met and married Linda Grable in 1962. Linda is a retired Medical Transcriber and they have two grown children and two precious grandchildren. He has served as a deacon since 2000. They moved to Texas in 2006 and joined Holy Trinity, Hurst, where Ken served for the last 5 years. Linda has played the keyboard, cello, and has sung in the choir at Holy Trinity and is active in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry.

Nathan Dunlap, his wife Julie, and their six children have served as founding members of Christ the King Anglican, Liberty, KY where they make their home.

At the Missionary Society's clericus in October, Nathan was commissioned as a brother in the MSJ and will be joining Fr Francis Wardega in traveling to Tanzania on another MSJ teaching mission under the auspices of The Rt. Rev. Boniface Kwangu, Bishop of Victoria Nyanza, Anglican Church of Tanzania.

Br.Nathan earned a B.S. from Berea College in Kentucky and studied overseas mission work at the Ministers Training Institute in Baker, Louisiana. He was valedictorian of his graduating class of 40 missionaries. He has three times served in Russia , once with his wife Julie and two of their children, Anna and Ethan. In Russia, Nathan served as an assistant pastor, leading several home Bible studies and serving as music minister, at churches in Rezhev and Nelidovo (about 200 miles NW of Moscow) for 13 months.

Fr Francis Wardega has announced that this upcoming trip will be his last. Fr Francis intends to focus on a stateside ministry of renewal in the Spirit for parishes. May God bless Br.Nathan and Fr. Francis as they leave in a matter of weeks for work among our communion brothers and sisters in Tanzania. May Lord keep you in His hands.

St John the Apostle Anglican Church will be hosting an episcopal visit from Bishop William H. Illgenfritz of the Missionary Diocese of All Saints (MDAS), on Wednesday, January 19 · 6:00pm - 9:00pm. ST. STEPHEN'S ATHENS TEXAS NOW IN COMMUNION
WITH MILLIONS OF ANGLICANS WORLDWIDE

Twenty years ago on Advent Sunday, December 2, 1990 a few Episcopalians led by Father Vernon Grosvenor founded St. Stephens Anglican Church in Athens, Texas. Meeting first at the Cain Center they soon acquired from the Church of the Nazarene a building on Rocky Ridge Road where they worshipped until they built and occupied their current facilities on East College Street. Their numbers grew quickly from seven to over fifty.

On July 5, 2009 St. Stephen’s voted to leave the ACA for several reasons and became an independent parish. Father Jerry Pardue, a Nashotah House Seminary graduate, continued as the Rector of the parish. Anglicanism is hierarchical and a parish, although not preferred, can survive as an independent organization but a priest must have a Bishop. After much prayer and discernment Father Pardue sought membership and was received by the Missionary Society of St. John the Evangelist (MSJ) coming under the care and supervision of the Rt. Rev. Frederick Fick, Father-General of the order.

The parish remained independent continuing to discern where the Holy Spirit might lead it. After much investigation, discussion and prayer the members of the congregation unanimously decided to follow their Rector into full membership in the society. MSJ is a convocation of the Missionary Diocese of All Saints with the Rt. Rev. William Ilgenfritz, Diocesan Bishop. The diocese is in the Anglican Church in North America. St. Stephen’s was in communion with a few hundred when first joined to the ACA, then in communion with no one as an independent, is now in communion with over 100,000 fellow Anglicans in 750 plus congregations. In fact they are now in communion with millions as the ACNA is affirmed by the majority of the world wide Anglican Communion.

Sunday, December 5, Bishop Fick came to St. Stephen’s to accept the parish into the MSJ at a Pontifical High Mass at 10 am assisted by Father Bob Tomlinson, Dean of the Texas chapter. At 4 pm the parish presented its annual Lessons and Carols for Advent for the many friends of St. Stephen’s who worship at other churches in the morning to celebrate the new affiliation.

Liberty, Kentucky Site Of MSJ Clericus

The Missionaries of St John descended upon the small southern Kentucky area of Liberty for three days of prayer, worship, meetings and fellowship, October 27-31.

We will not soon forget the azure blue skies, the soft rustle of autumn leaves and beauty that is rural Kentucky. Our thanks go out to the good people of Christ the King Anglican for hosting and to the Kentucky Deanery for all their work in preparing a great clericus.

Sharing in a sung morning prayer, using Anglican Chant, was particularly memorable as were the late night conversations around a bonfire.

Two men were accepted as postulants for holy orders and Nathan Dunlap was recognized as having completed his postulancy is a candidate for ordination to the deaconate.

The MSJ clerics spent time studying the liturgics concerning using unction within the context of Holy Communion, studying the role of the Anglican deaconess, and reviewing the principles of canonical conciliarism as outlined by Dr. Kevin Donlon at last year's Forward In Faith Assembly.

Labor Day

Begun as a nod toward labor unions, today Labor Day focuses more simply upon the value of work. Labor. In Genesis, Adam was tasked to care for the garden into which he was placed. Upon being expelled from the Garden, the Lord told Adam that he would have to work, that "by the sweat of his brow" he would produce food and care for himself and his family.

Work is the nature of man's existence. In fact, work is vital to dignity of mankind. Work, all work, gives purpose, value and dignity.

With an official unemployment rate of 10% and with the real percentage pegged by most at 15% or more, it behooves us to remember those who seek meaningful employment this Labor Day weekend, in our private and corporate prayers.

Work. We thank God for our bodies and minds which we may gives to tasks that demonstrate we are created in God's image.

Heavenly Father, we remember before you those who suffer
want and anxiety from lack of work. Guide the people of this
land so to use our public and private wealth that all may find
suitable and fulfilling employment, and receive just payment
for their labor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Missions Opportunity

Has the Lord planted a seed in your heart called “AFRICA?” There is a need for two short term missionary teachers to work in Africa late this year, early next year for approximately 4-5 weeks. Fr Francis is going to retire from teaching in Africa. There is a need for two new teachers to work on short term mission trips to East Africa – Tanzania and Kenya. These teachers would work in rural areas teaching ministry education to clergy, postulants and church leaders. This is an exciting opportunity to serve in mission country in Africa and do work that leaves a lasting legacy. Fr Francis served as a missionary teacher while working at a full time job, pastoring a parish, and doing other priestly work. It would be valuable if these new teachers accompanied Fr Francis on the 2010-2011 teaching trip.

Why do this? The Anglican Church is growing significantly in Africa. Often, African bishops appoint and sometimes ordain pastors and evangelists who have no formal ministry education and even minimal secular education, to pastor congregations because leaders are needed. Education later is promised.

Paul did it this way. He appointed leaders and then trained them later by letter. He depended on the Holy Spirit and the early Scriptures. Roland Allen wrote about this practice in his book: Missionary Methods: St Paul's or Ours. This is not to minimize the importance of education - in reality it emphasizes education even more. Paul's letters offer teaching to the ones he left behind. OFM provides ministry education to those whose heart is right and who love and serve God's people.

What is taught: Beliefs, Practices and Teachings of the Christian Church; Ethos of Ordained Ministry; Introduction to the Sacraments; Fundamentals of Sacred Scripture; Introduction to Preaching; Pastoral Theology; Introduction to Liturgy; and other topics, too.

A boat without a rudder on Lake Victoria floats aimlessly as the winds and currents direct. An uneducated pastor is the same. A church without an educated pastor is vulnerable to many false teachings and sometimes makes mistakes that hurt the people. African dioceses often list their statistics in this fashion: 45 clergy, 40 parishes, 85 churches. Many parishes and churches are led by uneducated good people, both ordained and lay leaders, who have worked hard for years. They are eager for education and training. They need you and your education. Will you respond?

The Retreat House Produce

The MSJ maintains a retreat house in northern Michigan, located near pristine lakes, deep, dark woods, and nationally recognized streams and rivers. During the past year, dozens of couples, clergy and lay, have spent a few days for rest and renewal. A dozen families have spent some or all of their vacation camping on the grounds or just stopping in for an extended rest period.

What you might not know is that Bishop Fred is an avid organic gardener and guests enjoy the produce these gardens give. "It takes a tremendous amount of work, but I find it as extremely rewarding", said the bishop.

Tomorrow, he will take six bushels of new red potatoes, freezer boxes filled with fresh cut broccoli and cabbage, fresh picked green beans, cucumbers and lettuce, along with a bushel or two of tomatoes to the Emmanuel Mission, an emergency homeless shelter operated by Hope Anglican Church, MSJ, in Oscoda, MI. While such an episcopal visit might seem unusual to some, it typifies the heart, soul and spirit of the Missionary Society.

Almost a year ago, Fr Jeff Johnston MSJ and his wife, Liz, began to understand the Lord was calling them to return to Michigan from Austin, TX. This wasn't merely a heart's desire, but a call specifically to Hope Anglican Church, MSJ, in Oscoda. Confirmed by the bishop, the call was tested by the selling of a home and the purchase of a new one in a most smooth and blessed process. Today, the Big Yellow Truck pulled into the drive on Mill Street. A gang of family and friends helped the Johnston's unload and begin the process of settling into their new home, new community and new parish. Hope Anglican Church is pastored by the Rev. Fr. Thomas Anderson MSJ. Fr. Jeff will be installed as the assistant rector, by Bishop Frederick Fick, Father General of the MSJ, at the regular Sunday morning eucharist, 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 25. Everyone is welcome to share in the celebration.

Kent Ohio Gathering - MDAS

Bishop Bill Ilgenfritz paid a visit to Fr. David Mathus and Holy Cross Anglican Church, Kent, Ohio on Thursday evening, May 20. The meeting included a dinner fellowship, conversation and eucharist. Terry Moore, Francis Wardega, Patricia Wardega, John Geyer, Ray Zeitz, and Marlene Zeitz, all of the MSJ, attended. Three MSJ postulants also joined in the evening of warm fellowship. In his sermon, Bishop Bill stressed the mission of the church is to care for one another, help those in need, and to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Receive him into the arms of thy mercy, into the blessed rest of everlasting peace, and into the glorious company of the saints in light. Amen.

Deacon Roy Newman, MSJ has passed from this world to eternal life with his Master. Roy now serves with the angels, archangels and all the company of heaven and joins their unending praise.

Rest in peace, good friend. Until we meet again on that heavenly shore, we will miss you very, very much.
